Inclusive Practices in Higher Education: Institutional and Classroom Experiences from a Rural College in Assam

Inclusion in higher education extends beyond formal institutional provisions and requires the creation of educational environments in which diverse learners feel respected, supported and able to participate meaningfully. This paper examines inclusive institutional and classroom practices at Kharupetia College, Darrang, Assam, through a reflective qualitative approach grounded in the author’s professional experiences as a teacher and involvement in institutional activities. The reflection focuses on institutional support mechanisms, gender-sensitive initiatives, inclusive classroom pedagogy, linguistic diversity, digital practices, co-curricular participation, mentoring and teacher-student relationships. It highlights how everyday pedagogical practices, including flexible explanation, encouragement of classroom participation, peer interaction and additional academic guidance, can contribute to inclusion in a heterogeneous student environment. The paper also identifies continuing challenges relating to disability inclusion, differences in academic preparedness, digital inequalities, systematic mentoring and less visible forms of exclusion. It argues that inclusion cannot be understood as a one-time institutional achievement or the responsibility of individual committees alone. Rather, it is a continuous process created through the interaction of institutional structures, pedagogical practices and supportive relationships. The paper concludes that strengthening inclusion requires sustained institutional reflection, responsive teaching, student participation, sensitisation and continued attention to barriers that may prevent students from participating fully in academic and institutional life.
